ID remarks:
See discussion by Mathew (Rev. Allium Sect. Allium: 144. 1996), who acknowledges that, because of its type, A. ascalonicum L. is the earliest name for A. hierochuntinum Boiss. Following Stearn (in Bull. Brit. Mus. (Nat. Hist.), Bot. 2: 181. 1960), he informally rejected the former because it has been applied more or less continuously since 1762 to a well-known cultivar of A. cepa L. However, no formal rejection proposal has been made.
