Description: Plate from the "Gentleman's Magazine", Volume XXVIII, 1758. Etching with grey wash.Fig. 1 and 2 depict 'The Tortoise from Pennsylvania, side view and ventral view, described by Peter Collinson (on page 8), drawn by William Bartram, and engraved by Benjamin Cole (1695-1766).Cole also engraved the rest of the figures, which include Fig. 3 'A token, inscribed 'Thomas Hills, his Halfpenny, 1668, in Two Malling, Kent'; Fig. 4 'A Token, inscribed 'Oradiam Arrowsmith, in Tedbury Baylef.'; Fig. 5 'A copper coin of Mary II'; Fig. 6 'An Arabian Gem (an Emerald), with an Inscription from the Alcoran, in the Collection of Mr Reland.'
