Description:
Since the beginning of May, Abraham Bäck has been eagerly waiting for the news that Linnaeus has been appointed professor in Uppsala. He has not yet got it, but he is so sure of the outcome that he uses the title Professor in the introduction of the letter. He expects to have the information by the next mail, and he congratulates Linnaeus heartily. Bäck wonders if Linnaeus will have time to be installed before leaving for Gotland. Bäck will hasten to Stockholm when the issue of the appointment of an adjunctus reaches the stage of a formal suggestion. Bäck asks Linnaeus to act on his behalf and to approach the chancellor [Carl Gyllenborg] over the matter. Bäck knows that some of his competitors want to get rid of him. Bäck encloses a copy of his application for the position, which he is sending to the Uppsala University by the same mail. Bäck asks Linnaeus to reply to him and tell him when he should be in Stockholm, how the matter of the position develops, and when Linnaeus’s journey to Gotland will start. Bäck apologizes for this bold approach and asks Linnaeus not to forget to help him.

Högädle och Widtberömde Herr Doctor och Professor, Hwar Postdag hafwer jag nu sedan Maji månads början wäntat de angenäma tidender, at Profession wore bortgifwen til den, som jag mäst önskade. At likwel Herr Doctorn måtte se hwilken thet månde wara, och huru öfwertygad jag är om justitia caussae, samt wiss på lyckelig utgång; så hafwer jag tagit mig frihet, at bruka ny titel. Jag wäntar nästa Post få min önskan upfyld, och önskar å nyo samt förut lycka och welmåga, afläggandes min ödmiukaste gratulation. Jag undrar om Herr Professorn efter sin lofwen får tid at giöra sin Introduction för bortresan til Gothland; derefter kommer jag at skynda mig til Stockholm, när jag tror förslaget til Adjuncturen gått öfwer. Gunstige Herr Professor, glöm eij at wara mig behjelpelig, så wid förslagets upsättjande, som sedan hos Hans H[ögwälborne] Gr[efwe] Exellence Riks Rådet och Cancellairen. Så mycket de andre råda, så wille de hafwa mig jemwel utaf jorden, för det jag eij hafwer giordt et med dem. I dag sänder jag til Upsala min supplique om förslaget til Adjuncturen, af hwilken här innelÿckt följer Copia. Jag anhåller ödmiukast at få några rader tilbaka, och H[err] Professorens mening, både huru snart jag borde wara i Stockholm, samt hwad det lider med ofta omtalta förslaget, och äntå, som eij mindre rörer mig, huru snart Gothlands-resan går för sig.
